Printable ring sizer that checks your printer
A two-page PDF: a finger strip and actual-size circles, in US, UK and EU sizes. It also checks that your printer printed it at true size, and corrects it if not.
Runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
Step 1
Download and print
Print at 100% / Actual size. Never "Fit to page".
Step 2
Measure the bar at the top of page 1
Put a ruler on the 100 mm bar (or the 4 inch bar). Exactly right? You are done: use the sheet. Not exact? Enter what you measured, and we make a sizer that cancels your printer's error.
Page 1: finger strip
Cut it out, wrap it around your finger and read your size at the slit. US sizes on top, UK letters below, EU (mm) in the middle. Plus a spare, and a box to write your size.
Page 2: ring circles
Actual-size circles in half sizes. Lay a ring that fits on top and find the circle that matches its inside edge. Each circle shows US, UK, EU and the diameter in mm.
Why most printable ring sizers come out wrong
Almost every printable ring sizer online is a PDF from a jeweller with one line of advice: "print at 100%". The trouble is that you cannot see whether that worked. Many printers and PDF viewers shrink the page a little to fit their margins, often by 2 to 6 percent.
That sounds small. But one US ring size is only 0.81 mm of inside diameter. A 3% shrink turns a size 7 circle (17.3 mm) into 16.8 mm, which is a size 6½. You would order a ring half a size too big, and never know why.
This sizer has a 100 mm bar and a 4 inch bar on page 1. Measure one with any ruler. If it is off, enter the length you measured in step 2. We build a new PDF that is scaled up or down by exactly the amount your printer got wrong, so the second print comes out at true size.
How to use the finger strip
- Cut out the strip along the dashed line, and cut the short red slit.
- Wrap it around the base of your finger, with the printed side facing out.
- Push the narrow tip through the slit. Pull until it is snug but would still slide over your knuckle.
- Read the size at the slit. Between two marks? Choose the larger one.
Paper does not stretch, but skin does. Measure three times, and do it at the end of the day when your fingers are warm, not first thing in the morning or after being out in the cold.
How to use the ring circles
Take a ring that fits the finger you are sizing, and lay it flat on page 2. Your size is the circle whose line sits just inside the ring's inner edge: you can see the whole line, with no paper showing between the line and the metal. If the ring is between two circles, go with the larger one.
This is the most reliable home method, because a ring you already wear has passed the real test: it goes over your knuckle and stays on. Want to skip printing? The on-screen ring sizer does the same thing on your phone.
Men's and women's printable ring sizers
The finger strip covers every size from US 1 to 17 for everyone. The circles page can be narrowed: women's sizes run US 3 to 10, and men's run US 7 to 15. If you are not sure, choose "All sizes". See the men's ring size chart for wide bands, which usually need a slightly larger size.
When to use a jeweller's sizer instead
A paper sizer is a good guide. For an engagement ring, a wedding band or a ring that cannot be resized (some tungsten, titanium and eternity rings), check with a metal ring sizer before you order. Jewellers will size you for free, and reusable plastic sizers cost a few dollars online.
Common questions
- Are printable ring sizers accurate?
- They can be, if the page prints at exactly the right size. One US ring size is only 0.81 mm of diameter, so a printer that shrinks the page by 3% moves you about half a size. That is why this sizer has a 100 mm bar and a 4 inch bar: measure one, and if it is off, enter what you measured and download a corrected sizer.
- What printer settings do I need?
- Choose "Actual size" or "100%" in the print dialog. Turn off "Fit to page", "Shrink oversized pages" and borderless printing. Pick the same paper size you downloaded: US Letter or A4.
- My 100 mm bar measures 97 mm. What do I do?
- Type 97 into the "My bar measured" box and download again. The new PDF is printed 103.1% larger, which cancels your printer's shrink. Print it with the same settings and measure again. It should now be 100 mm.
- Should I use the strip or the circles?
- Use the circles if you have a ring that fits the right finger. Matching a real ring is usually more reliable than wrapping paper. Use the strip if you do not have a ring, or if you are sizing a finger for the first time.
- Does it have half sizes?
- Yes. The circles go up in half sizes, and the strip marks every half size in US and every half letter in UK sizing.
- Can I use this to size an engagement ring in secret?
- You can match one of their rings that fits the ring finger, which is the best home method. For an expensive ring, ask the jeweller about free resizing too, because no home method is perfect.
- Is this a ring sizer for men too?
- Yes. Choose "Men's sizes" to get circles from US 7 to 15. The strip covers every size from US 1 to 17 either way.
